While I still think “Truffles” on the left is cute, I can see how I have improved using the medium over the years. <image:title>Blog - How to Correct Mistakes when Using Colored Pencils - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>An example of varying pressures using colored pencils. I used wax-based pencils here which lay on thicker and are “stickier”. Hold the pencil loosely and further from the point to try and get a light layer of color. Hold the pencil closer to the tip to create harder pressure.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Correct Mistakes when Using Colored Pencils - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Here you can see where I used the putty eraser to remove pigment from a wax-based pencil on top and an oil-based pencil on the bottom. Both hues were indigo. The whitish blotches on the left side of the spheres are where I tried to remove pigment. Note that it is easier to remove oil-based pigment. The paper type was Canson Bristol-Vellum.</image:caption>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ecbbb844215f5026a797d14/e56b4579-66a2-4a0c-b9ab-761aa8f7ca7f/tape.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - How to Correct Mistakes when Using Colored Pencils - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The tape didn’t remove much pigment from the Prismacolor sphere. I put the tape in the same spot where I put the kneaded eraser. It removed a bit more pigment, but that wax-based pencil is stubborn! You can see how I put the tape on the sphere over the Polychromos sphere. Make sure you either hold the tape up with your finger or fold the tape back so that the whole piece doesn’t get stuck on your paper. In the last image below, you’ll be able to see how much pigment this tape took off, which was a good bit. It was actually taking off pigment anywhere the tape touched, so it’s definitely more effective with oil-based pencils.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - In A Nutshell I’ll walk you through an example using this app, but in general, the app will tell you which three (sometimes 2 or 1) colored pencil colors of the brand you selected will provide you with a color match to your reference photo. The app will provide you with a mix-ratio as well (how much of each color to layer). I don’t go by this information exactly, but I’ll get into that below as I walk through an example using Jo, the beautiful dog.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Step 1</image:title>
<image:caption>After you open the app, select which brand of colored pencils you are using to create your piece. The number next to the brand name denotes the number of pencils in your pack. For my portrait of Jo I am using my box of 120 Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and therefore I will choose “Polychromos 120s”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Step 3</image:title>
<image:caption>After you load your image, you will see something like the above picture, but of course with your reference image. Move the crosshairs with your finger to select an area where you want to figure out the color. The crosshair in this example is on Jo’s cheekbone. How The Colored Pencil Picker App Says to Use the Software The numbers “2, 1, 1” on the screen are the ratio that is supposed to give you the “Mix Preview” color. In the example above, the numbers mean that you should put down one light layer of Terracotta, followed by one layer of Warm Grey II, one layer of Light Yellow Ochre, and finally one more layer of Terracotta. Also note that there is a “Target” box, which denotes the pixel color you are trying to match, and a “Mix Preview”, which is what the suggested color mix is supposed to give you. Ideally, these two colors should match, but sometimes the software can’t come up with a perfect resolution. I highly recommend you test a mixture if you are unsure on a piece of scrap paper. Sometimes it has you doing a crazy, unnecessary mixture, or a mixture that will look not quite right. I believe this happens because we aren’t using paint and colored pencils don’t mix the same. For example, if you mix red and green paint, you would get brown, but when using colored pencils you might get something different and not so pretty. You may see more green or red because it’s not mixing as well. How I End Up Using the Software Now that I have been drawing with colored pencils for 4 years, I don’t have to use the app all the time to figure out a color mixture (although I do use it to isolate colors quite frequently- more on that below). But let’s say I am at a loss and I need some help discerning what colors to pick. I would put the cursor over Jo’s cheekbone to get a better look. Then I’d look at the “Target” color on the right-bottom side of the screen. I’d consider if I have a pencil color(s) that I know will be a good match (I’m not always looking for 100% accuracy). In this case, I might say Ivory and Burnt ochre. Then I would test my theory on a piece of scrap paper. If I feel that I have a good match, I might proceed with that combination. If I can’t think of a good match on my own I wouild look at the mix that the app is telling me to use. The key here is to consider if the colors the app lists would make sense because they don’t always as I suggested with the red and green combinations. The mix in the picture above looks like it might work out. I tried it out on a piece of scrap paper, and it looked good. You will find with colored pencils that a lot of roads lead to Rome. Which is good news! That means many different combinations can give you a satisfactory outcome. You’ll find that the combinations can vary when you move the cursor around. So I like to move it around a bit to see if I can see a combination that makes the most sense. Then I’ll use that same combination in all areas where there is a similar hue. For example, I am using burnt ochre, cinnamon, and green gold on a lot of mid-tone areas in my portrait of Jo. I don’t use the exact color combinations that the app says to use all over my picture. That would be unnecessary and it would take forever! Finally, another good way to use the app is just to use the cursor to isolate a color. Sometimes it’s hard to see what color you need because your eyes are taking in so much surrounding information. See the picture below. It looks white, but it’s not white at all.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Step 1- Open and Duplicate the Background layer Click on “File/Open” and navigate to the image you want to use as your reference photo. You should see it on your screen. Next, we need to make a copy of this layer. To do that, hover over the “Background” layer, right-click, and select “Duplicate”. You don’t need to rename it if you don’t want to. This step is only necessary so that you don’t mess up your original layer.</image:title>
    </image:image>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Step 2- Create space around your image to drag your color blobs</image:title>
<image:caption>Make sure you have your Background Copy layer selected before you proceed. That means everything that happens from here on out will only happen to your copied layer. Then go to “Image/Canvas Size”. Change the measurement to inches if it isn’t already set that way. You can change the size of your image here, which is helpful for printing it out to be the correct size. Make sure the “Relative” box is checked. Add 3 inches to all sides of your reference photo to create a border. This is where we will drag the colors so that you can see them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Step 3- Blur the pixels a tad</image:title>
<image:caption>When selecting a color, the software will look at a small area of pixels. As a result, you could get almost too much variation of color, which might be too overwhelming. To remedy this, we can blur the image a smidge. To do this click on “Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur”. In this box, you can either type in a number next to “Radius” or drag the arrow below it. Both do the same thing: merge neighboring pixels together, making the image appear to have a blur. Make sure the “Preview” box is checked so you can see what your image will look like if you click “OK”. Once you think you’ve erased a tad of the detail and are happy with the preview, click “OK”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Step 4- Dragging out color blobs</image:title>
<image:caption>Now we are ready for the fun part, creating the blobs! First, select the paintbrush tool on the left side of the screen. On the top of the toolbar, you should see the radius that the paintbrush tool is set to paint with. Make it big enough that you can see, but not too big because you don’t want to select a huge area of color, depending on your subject matter. The idea is to capture some of the main colors in the reference photo. In this example, the dogs are at a smaller scale, so I set my radius to 40 to make sure I don’t capture too much of an area. Decide to focus on an area where you want to determine its color. Blurring your eyes also helps to zero in on the main colors of the image. With the paintbrush tool selected, hold down the “Alt” button and click left with your mouse. You should see a circle with another circle just inside of it. The color that is depicted on the inner circle is the color that the paintbrush will paint. Make sure it looks like the color that you want to drag into your border. If it is, release the “Alt” and left-click button. The next time you left-click, hold the left-click button down and drag the color onto the border. Make a circular motion to create a color blob and release the mouse button. You should see a line from the selected area and a color blob on your canvas. Keep repeating this process for as many colors as you would like to select.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Step 5- Print out your picture</image:title>
<image:caption>After you have created color blobs of what you think are the major colors of your piece, you can print your project out. I would use photography paper, if possible. Then you can match these colors to the swatches you made in Method 1. Alternatively, you can scribble colored pencils you think will match up well on a piece of scrap paper and hold them up to your printout before committing them to your final piece. you could also hold your swatches up to the computer, but keep in mind that colors may appear different depending on what computer screen you are looking at.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Creating the Swatches</image:title>
<image:caption>Make sure to use the same paper that you draw on the most, because colors may look slightly different depending on what paper you prefer. I used medium to hard pressure for my swatches, which perhaps wasn’t the best idea. Preferably, you could use a variety of pressure on each square, which would show what the color would look like with light and heavier pressure. I punched holes at each rectangle’s tops so I could string the swatches together. You could do this if you find it helpful. I never did string mine together. However, that said, I did lose one of the swatches so it’s not a bad idea…</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Match Colored Pencils to A Reference Photo - Using the Swatches</image:title>
<image:caption>After you have created your swatches, simply hold the card up to the reference photograph. I was trying to match Ruby’s orange fur under her snoot here. Mineral orange, Prismacolor #1033, was a close match, although Ruby’s fur is a tad browner. Based on this knowledge I would probably try and mix a little brown on top of the Mineral orange on a scrap piece of drawing paper to see if I could create an even better match. If it was, I would apply that combination to my drawing. I’m a firm believer in scribbling on scrap drawing paper to make sure I have a decent match before committing my color choices to my artwork. Again, make sure you use the same kind of paper that you are drawing on if you do this. I like to keep all scraps specifically for this purpose. Some artists create larger swatches than I did. Then they punch a hole in the middle of the swatch so that they can hold it over the reference photo to match that way. You might prefer to create your swatches in that manner. I suppose it would help to zero in on the one space you are matching. Sometimes our eyes get confused by viewing neighboring colors, so I could see how that tactic might be helpful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 10 Tips to Ensure A Great Photo of Your Pet - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Look at this example of a not-so-great shot. I took this of my dog, Addie, trying to mimic a favorite painting of mine called “Master Bedroom”, by Andrew Wyeth. There is natural light coming in on the right side of the photo, but the room is so dark, it makes it very hard to see her details. If I tried to make a decent drawing out of this photo, it would be very difficult due to limited information on the photo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 10 Tips to Ensure A Great Photo of Your Pet - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Here is a better reference photo of Addie. Although she is in the woods, there is sunlight coming in through the trees which makes for an interesting portrait. If I were to draw this picture, I would center up the picture and add the rest of her front legs to show her whole body.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The picture of Derby and Lulu was taken outside, although on a cloudy day. Even though the sun was not bright on this day, the photograph is still well lit and shows plenty of detail and some shadow. The difference with a cloudy day is that the sunlight is diffused through the clouds, which makes the light more evenly dispersed. As a result the light and shadow areas are not high in contrast. It still made for a great reference photo, and this may actually be a lighting look that some people prefer. So if you like softer lighting like this, try and get a photo on a cloudy day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love this picture of Peppy. Peppy’s mom zoomed in and captured a lovely shot of him, probably next to a window. The lighting of the picture helps us to see Peppy’s beautiful features, and also provides a nice contrast to the black background. I drew this one in pencil a few years ago, but I would love to redo it with colored pencils or pastels.</image:caption>
